Pop philosophy

Recently I was asked to subscribe to Brain Pickings on Facebook as a surefire shortcut to enlightened thought.
That is like expecting just a dictionary to teach the spoken word.
Or a rule book, a wonderful training schedule and a racquet to teach world class tennis.

What is the genesis of such recommendations? This was a particularly well meant and heartfelt reco.
The person actually believed that reading on Brain Pickings guaranteed enlightened thought.
I’ll borrow from Buddha to make such claims. Ruminate on this sentence long enough and gain momentary enlightenment :

Suffering exists in the world and the reason for all suffering is craving.

I am only half-serious of course. I don’t want you suffering for my cravings.
